Cannes Information

Cannes is one of the best-known cities of the French Riviera, a busy tourist destination and host of the annual Cannes Film Festival. There is so much more to Cannes than just its annual Film Festival, although the influence that this simply massive event has on the region is not to be underestimated. Each May, the Cannes Film Festival brings some of Hollywood's biggest stars to the city and even though it lasts just a couple of weeks, Cannes manages to bask in its glory long after.

However, outside of May, Cannes still manages to attract tourists in their droves, who come to this part of southern France to enjoy the endless sunshine and beautiful stretches of sand. Although some of the beaches in Cannes are private and solely for the use of hotel guests, many others are free of charge, such as the Plages du Midi and also the Plages de la Bocca, where water sports are plentiful.

The waterfront itself is edged by the lengthy Boulevard de La Croisette, while nearby, the historic character of the town remains clearly present within the 'Le Suquet' quarter, located on the western side of the Vieux Port. For tourism information, there are two main tourist offices in Cannes, at both the Palais des Festivals building on the Boulevard La Croisette, and also at the train station on the Boulevard d'Alsace.

Apart from the Cannes Film Festival and the resort's many beaches, other popular tourist attractions include the Tour du Masque, the huge Olympia cinema complex, and the municipal library at the beautiful Villa Rothschild. Also worth noting, many seasonal events in Cannes regularly take place at the Palais des Festivals, such as exhibitions and conferences. The Palais des Festivals is also known for its gaming and boasts around 300 slot machines.

Significant landmarks in Cannes offer information about its past days and include the historic Notre Dame d'Esperance, a grand church known to date back to the middle of the 17th century. Also of local significance is the Russian-style St. Michel Archange Church and Le Grand Jas Cemetery, while just a short boat trip from Cannes in the Ile Saint Honorat and its ancient Abbaye Notre Dame de Lérins monastery.

A number of good museums are present around Cannes and include the Musée de la Castre, which has actually become of the city's premier tourist attraction and is home to an array of Mediterranean antiquities and archaeological treasures. Also worth investigating are the artefacts from shipwrecks at the Musée de la Mer (Maritime Museum), and the striking modern art works at both the Galerie de la Malmaison and the Musée Chapelle Bellini (Bellini Chapel Museum).
